Draft Magazine Honors Six Milwaukee Beer Bars

Legendary Schlitz and other hometown brews "made Milwaukee famous" down through the years, and now the city boasts six of the "Best Beer Bars in America" according to the January/February 2009 issue of Draft magazine. According to Draft, not only does the city pride itself on its own brewing heritage, it has become a "Little Europe" for discerning beer-lovers as well.

Of Milwaukee's vast number of  award-winning micro-brew pubs, neighborhood taverns, as well as bars specializing in German, Belgian and Irish beers, the magazine's tasters featured the following:

  • Fat Abbey Biercafe http://www.fatabbey.com/ , whose owners follow the custom in Brussels and strive to serve each of their Belgian beers in its own glass.
  • County Clare http://www.countyclare-inn.com/ , where the stove-lit Saints Snug and the strains of live Irish music beckon those drinking the perfectly poured pint of Guiness.
  • Milwaukee Ale House http://www.ale-house.com/ with its ten house brews and six public boat slips on the Milwaukee River, where beer glasses of Mug Club afficionados receive a permanent home on the honor wall.
  • Old German Beer Hall http://www.oldgermanbeerhall.com/ , a Munich-style beer hall serving Hofbrau beers and typical German festival foods - warm, soft pretzels and Milwaukee's own Usinger's sausages produced right across the street.
  • Palm Tavern , with its 200 Belgian beers on tap and in bottles, and its sister pub Sugar Maple with 50 Midwestern microbrews on tap.

These days it's giant MillerCoors that "makes Milwaukee famous", and along with award-winning microbreweries - Lakefront Brewery and Sprecher Brewery - as  well as America's only tour of riverfront breweries by boat, the city's brewing heritage continues to thrive and explore ways to serve up new niche markets. Prosit!
