Milwaukee’s Cool Continues to Rise

Among a slew of U.S. cities that declined steadily following World War II and have experienced varying degrees of revitalization over the past 10 to 15 years, Milwaukee is unquestionably one of the most dramatic comeback stories.

Milwaukee officials will receive a national award next week for the exterior renovation of its city hall building.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation will present Mayor Tom Barrett and other officials its Preservation Honor Award at a ceremony in Austin, Texas on Oct. 29. Twenty-two other projects will also be honored.

The building, constructed in the German Renaissance Revival style, was completed in 1896 but weathering, hard use and alterations damaged it. So the city spend three years and nearly $66 million to restore it. The project was done in December of 2008

Organization president, Stephanie Meeks, says restoring the building showed the city's commitment to the history and character of downtown Milwaukee.

She called it "one of the most beautiful municipal buildings in America."
