Movie Time: Kings Row

Description: Kings Row 1942, 127 min Ann Sheridan, Robert Cummings, Ronald Reagan, Betty Field, Claude Rains, Charles Colburn, Judith Anderson, Maria Ouspenskaya Henry Bellamann s best-selling novel is brought magnificently to the screen in one of the outstanding films of all time. A fascinating story of a small American town at the turn of the 20th century, where the lives of the townspeople are all intertwined, culminating in love, forbidden relationships, murder and tragedy. Some of the more taboo subjects in the book were toned down in this film version. The film contains some of the greatest performances of the film s major stars. Nominated for best picture and black and white cinematography. Also features Erich Wolfgang Korngold s finest score. The Movie Time film series is shown every other Wednesday. These films are presented by leading Milwaukee film historian, Dale Kuntz. Special choices from his collection of classic films from the 30s and 40s are shown on 16mm, reel-to-reel film. Most of his films are not available on DVD, so the audience has a rare opportunity to see these films in their original glory. Prior to each screening, Dale facinates the audience with his vast knowledge of film history and gives the inside scoop on each movie, including bizarre details about the stars and clues to help the auidence spot little oddities that ended up in the film instead of on the cutting room floor.

Wine Craze - Chardonnay

Description: After the seemingly endless April downpours, it s time for something dry. Like a Chardonnay. So, stop in for tastings from some of the world s top Chardonnay producers. Wines made from this hardy and adaptable grape vary greatly depending on climate, soil and winemaking style. Our tastings this month cover a wide range of terroir and winemaking styles, and are sure to provide insight on why Chardonnay is America s number one selling white wine. Hindsight Wines Chardonnay -- This Napa Valley Chardonnay opens with aromas of apple, citrus, pears, & honey. Three months aging in neutral oak lends a slight creaminess that complements the fruity character exceptionally well. Clean and crisp on the palate with a bright acidity uncommon in American Chardonnay s, it s perfect with food or for enjoying at the end of the day. Cake Bread Cellars Chardonnay (Napa Valley) -- Cake Bread s 2011 Chardonnay Napa Valley is beautifully balanced with fresh acidity and classic aromas and flavors. The diversity of the winemaker s Napa Valley terroir yields an elegantly structured Chardonnay. 2011 was among their coldest, wettest vintages and resulted in slow, even ripening of vines and the development of optimal fruit flavors at lower-than-normal sugar levels.

Spring Homeschool Day: Metamorphosis

Description: The Lynden Sculpture Garden offers Homeschool Days for children aged 6-15. Designed by art educator Jeremy Stepien and naturalist Naomi Cobb, these workshops integrate our collection of monumental outdoor sculpture with the natural ecology of 40 acres of park, ponds and woodland, creating a unique, hands-on, small-group experience of art and nature. Two workshop topics are offered each day, one focusing on three-dimensional artmaking and the other on the natural environment. Participants are divided by age, and switch between the appropriate two-hour workshops with a lunch break at midday. Parents are welcome to visit the grounds and house without charge. Questions? Jeremy Stepien, Director of Education jstepien@lyndensculpturegarden.org (414) 446-8481 Spring Homeschool Day Metamorphosis Thursday, May 23, 2013 9:30 am-2:30 pm Ages: 6-15 $25/$20 members Registration deadline: May 17, 2013. Space is limited, please register early. Dress appropriately for the weather; much time will be spent outdoors. The ponds at Lynden are where the very magical process of metamorphosis begins for insects, frogs and salamanders; the studio is where we use imagination to transform materials into works of art. Metamorphosis means that there are complete changes, which often occur in stages, in the form and structure of a creature after birth or hatching. In this two-part workshop we ll explore the evidence of these changes by peering into the ponds, looking through magnifying lenses, and sampling water, and we ll hatch an egg-shaped bundle of materials to form a creature of your imagination.

Under the leadership of John Steuart Curry, James Schwalbach and Aaron Bohrod, the Rural Art Program flourished in the 1940s and beyond, with strong participation by Wisconsin s non-professional artists, not only from rural areas but also from cities and suburbs. Today, WRAA works with UW Madison s Division of Continuing Studies to offer workshops, exhibitions, and critiques throughout the state to ensure that WRAA s 600 non-professional members, have opportunities to learn and flourish in their avocation. MOWA wants to encourage and support artists at this grassroots level by giving them exhibition opportunities in the state s only Museum dedicated to Wisconsin artists.

Reginald Baylor: Repetitive Patterns

Description: Fresh, colorful, and complex could be three words used to describe the paintings that have secured Reginald Baylor a place as one of the most original and recognizable artists working in Wisconsin today. Even so, this Milwaukee-born artist is always looking forward, expanding his horizons beyond acrylic on canvas to woodcuts, fabric, coloring books and digital media, revealing that while his style may be instantly recognizable, he does not wish to be constrained by any single medium. Beyond offering sensuous visual stimulation, what s Baylor s work about? It s about life in modern America. It s about home, work, pleasure, leisure, cultural icons, cultural norms, preconceptions and misconceptions. They might take a bit of deciphering, but in the end they reflect our image -saturated society, tell us stories about who we are, where we live and the world we have created around us. MOWA is delighted that one of its inaugural exhibitions will feature four brand-new, never-before-seen works by Reginald: two acrylic on canvas paintings, a textile piece and one digital media animation.

Antifragile: Contemporary Glass

Description: This exhibition will shatter any preconceptions you might have had about glass and will make you think about glass in a new, fresh light while marveling at what masters of their medium can do. Antifragile will demonstrate that the studio glass movement is alive and well in Wisconsin and that the selected artists, many of whom have national and international reputations, are producing work with remarkable confidence, originality and panache. Studio glass, compared to other art forms such as painting and sculpture, is relatively speaking, still in its infancy having only begun in Madison in the early 1960s. What is remarkable is that over the subsequent 50 years it has reached a level of sophistication and maturity beyond anyone s imagination. Instead of factory-produced decorative and functional glassware being the norm, artists became designer/makers, enhancing their skills to the point where glass is almost used as a canvas to convey meaning, message and inspiration. Stellar examples of this are in this exhibition, together with others who have taken the possibilities of glass further, creating conceptual pieces that address such subjects as genetically modified foods, climate change, mortality inherited from the 17th century tradition of still-life paintings, and light as the source of creation and discovery. That Wisconsin has remained a tremendously strong state for studio glass production is evident by the geographic diversity of the featured artists: Stephan Cox (River Falls), James and Renee Engebretson (Hudson), Steve Feren (Fitchburg), Audrey Handler (Verona), Wes Hunting (Princeton), Lisa Koch (Madison), Beth Lipman (Sheboygan Falls), Thomas and Rebecca Maras (Hudson), Mick Meilahn (Pickett), Karen Naylor (Wilmot), Nolan Prohaska (New Richmond), Chuck Savoie (Ripon), Douglas and Renee Sigwarth (River Falls), and Stephanie Trenchard and Jeremy Popelka (Sturgeon Bay). While working in the same medium, these artists (who are all formally trained), consciously or subconsciously maintain what can be regarded as a Wisconsin tradition: a legacy of self-taught artists who cherish their independence and eschew trends and fads. Another unifying factor is that their diverse and predominantly rural locations offer something that is extremely beneficial: quality of life and ease of production. In short, they can afford to run independent studio facilities that might be prohibitive in larger urban areas. Additionally, their relative isolation means less distraction, leading to another standout feature: the uniqueness of each artist s work and development of styles that are instantly recognizable.

Chasing Horizons

Description: Opening Reception - Friday May 3, 2013 - 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. Roundtable Discussion and Q&A with Co-curators Nirmal Raja, Christopher Willey, and participating artists. Panel begins at 7:00 p.m. How are present day artists responding to the land? Have technologies like satellite imagery and the internet demystified the landscape? How are artists in turn using these technologies to enrich and influence their work? Has the reverence for the landscape that artists like George Innes and Winslow Homer portrayed in their work diminished or increased in recent artwork?' These are the questions that curators Nirmal Raja and Christopher Willey are exploring in the exhibition Chasing Horizons. 12 Artists will be exhibiting their response to the varied, open, and constantly changing concept of landscape through a variety of media such as digital photography, video, kinetic and site specific sculpture, paintings, and mixed media installations. The artists featured in the exhibition are: Emily Belknap, Beki Borman, Crystal Ann Brown, Stephen Cartwright, Allan DeSouza, Kevin Giese, Tonia Klein, Dara Larson, Paul Ramirez Jonas, Alessandra Torres, Clement Valla, and Jason S. Description: John Grade s (WA) dynamic new installation, Capacitor, explores an immediate and direct relationship with the natural world. The massive work responds to weather conditions at the Arts Center. Real Pirates

Description: Ahoy, Mateys! The Jolly Roger will be raised over the Milwaukee Public Museum on December 14, 2012, as Real Pirates takes over the Museum s special exhibit halls. Experience the Golden Age of Piracy aboard the Whydah, one of the most successful pirate ships of her day, and learn about her roots as a slave ship and subsequent takeover and conversion into a pirate ship in the early 1700s. One of the most technologically advanced vessels of her day, the Whydah was captured on her maiden voyage by legendary pirate Sam Bellamy and his crew. After a few alterations and a quick hoist of the Jolly Roger, the Whydah became the flagship of Bellamy's flotilla, leading raids throughout Caribbean waters and up the Atlantic coastline. On April 26, 1717, the perfect storm put an end to the Whydah's sailing days, and she sank with most of her crew aboard as well as the bounty from more than 50 captured ships. Almost 300 years later, underwater explorer Barry Clifford and his team managed to locate the wreck of the Whydah and painstakingly unearthed her treasures from the ocean floor, making her the first fully authenticated pirate ship ever to be discovered in U.S. waters. Organized by National Geographic and Arts and Exhibitions International, Real Pirates examines the history of rich Caribbean trade routes during the 18th century and the link between the slave trade and piracy. You'll encounter compelling true stories of those who lived aboard the Whydah and learn about the forces that shaped their world.

Christine Lee: Interlocked

Description: Linking her aesthetic and creative sensibilities with a desire to explore ways in which human beings understand and utilize our environment, artist Christine Lee creates installations that both delight and encourage contemplation. With a background in woodworking and furniture design, Lee manipulates and configures a variety of surplus items, such as recycled or salvaged wood, phone books, and fire hoses, to create her work. AMERICA CELEBRATES! Quilts of Joy and Remembrance

Description: America Celebrates! Quilts of Joy and Remembrance is a nationally touring exhibition of art quilts from American fiber artists, and is a joyful, diverse, and sometimes touching look at how we see ourselves as a nation. The exhibition, curated by Judith Trager, seeks to find how we as ordinary people share the threads and traditions that tie Americans together. Touching on holidays, cultural, and personal celebrations, the exhibition is a bright and colorful look at our cultural mores and how we see ourselves through our traditions. The exhibition will also feature those traditions that Americans brought with them as immigrants- Diwali from India, the Winter Solstice from Northern Europe, and Cinco de Mayo from Mexico. The artists in this exhibition are as diverse as the quilts themselves. The 57 artists come from every geographical region of the United States and represent many ethnic and cultural groups (and two are ex-patriot Americans living abroad). They have created a diverse assortment of designs commemorating occasions from personal to solemn. Each of these parts makes for a strong whole that is as diverse as the artists who contributed to the exhibition. This diversity emphasizes the unity of America and the joy that such diversity brings.
