Artists Now Lecture - Bruce Metcalf: The Semiotics of Jewelry

University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee Peck School of the Arts

Date: Sep 30 2010
Time: 7:00 p.m.
Location: Arts Center Lecture Hall, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee campus

Region: Downtown

Jewelry is inherently semiotic. That is to say, jewelry always carries a social message of some kind - about wealth and status, about seduction and desire, about personal narratives, and many other meanings. And yet, a formalist bias in design and art education has largely ignored the semiotic aspect of jewelry, at least until the rise of Post-Modernism. This lecture starts with a brief overview of semiotics, so the audience is familiar with basic terms and insights. Historical jewelry is then reviewed, showing the wide variety of signifieds traditionally attached to jewelry. The variety of traditional jewelry is then contrasted with the rather more restricted range of contemporary studio jewelry. About the artist: Metcalf uses wood, metal, plexi-glass and diverse techniques to create jewelry, sculptures, and wall relief. His whimsical yet restrained works comment on the human condition.

How much is "pretty" worth? That’s the question posed in the final installment of LaBute’s trilogy about our obsession with physical beauty, "Reasons To Be Pretty" offers the razor-sharp wit and insight we expect from this brilliant playwright -- and something new, hope. When a cruel off-hand remark disrupts the lives of two couples, they confront a sea of self-deceit, treachery - and their own willingness to change. Witness this engaging comic drama fresh from its hot New York run -- by the author of our 2008 hit, "Fat Pig." By Neil LaBute; Directed by Suzan Fete; Featuring Lenny Banovez (Greg), Carrie Coon (Stephanie), Steve Wojtas (Kent), Georgina McKee (Carly) .
