“Milwaukee Cake Boss” to premiere at Special Event Showcase
MILWAUKEE– March 21, 2011– Fondant, marzipan and butter cream are the stuff sweet dreams are made of. They will also hold the winning ticket to making one lucky chef’s dream come true at VISIT Milwaukee’s “Milwaukee Cake Boss” competition, premiering at its 2011 Special Event Showcase March 24, 2011 at the Frontier Airlines Center.
“Milwaukee Cake Boss" brings the energy and excitement of popular Food Network shows such as Ace of Cakes and Cupcake Wars to Special Event Showcase,” said event organizer Todd O’Leary, VISIT Milwaukee’s director of membership. “It adds fun and interest for attendees and it’s an opportunity to give back to our community at the same time.”
“Milwaukee Cake Boss” will pit top Wisconsin pastry chefs against each other and the clock in this first-time, fast-paced, cake decorating competition. Dave Schmidt, executive director of the Wisconsin Bakers Association, will judge each entry based on skill, presentation, professionalism, taste, artist’s talent and originality. Showcase attendees may cast a “People’s Choice” vote in the form of a cash donation to benefit Repairers of the Breach, a Milwaukee homeless shelter. The benefit is part of VISIT Milwaukee’s commitment to social responsibility.
Competitors include Tamara Mugerauer, owner and operator of Tamara's the Cake Guru. Mugerauer has more than 20 years of cake decorating experience and has won numerous wedding cake, traditional cake and gingerbread challenges.
Challenging Mugerauer for top honors will be Rachel Patterson of Sweet Perfections Bake Shop. Patterson has carved a special niche for herself in sculpted, two- and three-dimensional cakes. As a student, she won three school-sponsored decorating competitions.
All “Milwaukee Cake Boss” activities will take place at the Frontier Airlines Center. Cake decorating - 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.; People’s Choice judging - 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m.; professional judging 12:15 – 12:45 p.m.; announcement of winner – 1 p.m.
Special Event Showcase is celebrating its 13th year in 2011. The event provides opportunities for businesses in the hospitality industry to showcase their products and services to more than 500 regional meeting and event planners, corporate planners, association and executives and members of area associations. MTNA convention at the Frontier Airlines Center
March 25-30
MILWAUKEE– March 18, 2011– Music teachers from around the country will convene in Milwaukee for the National Conference of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) from March 25-30. The MTNA’s aim is to advance the value of music study and music making and support the professionalism of music teachers.
The Frontier Airlines Center will be the headquarters for the annual trade show and conference, featuring seminars and workshops on professional development including teaching and performing techniques. Master classes from prominent musicians and teachers, as well as performance competitions will round out a full range of program offerings.
Keynote speaker for the conference is Bill Moore, author of the book “Playing Your Best When It Counts: Mental Skills for Musicians.” After many years of helping athletes perform under stressful conditions, Moore found that the same strategies used in sports psychology could be used to enhance the performance of musicians. Mental performance skills require that a musician develop a trust in his/her practiced technical skills in order to give the best performance when it counts.
Evening performances are free and open to the public. Tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at the MTNA registration desk at the convention center for the ARC Ensemble from Canada’s Royal Conservatory of Music on Saturday, March 26th at 7:30 p.m.and for mezzo-soprano Denyce Graves at 8:00 p.m.on Tuesday, March 29th.

MILWAUKEE– March 14, 2011 – Milwaukee has been named one of twenty-four cities worldwide to receive a $400,000
The grant will specifically look at the sustainable economic model launched by Sweet Water Organics, an initiative which has developed an innovative aquaculture system producing fish and vegetables in an urban, converted warehouse setting on the city’s industrial south side. The concept of a closed system that conserves water was unveiled three years ago by Growing Power, a non-profit urban farm founded in Milwaukeeby Will Allen, winner of a 2008 MacArthur Foundation “Genius Grant.” Sweet Water Organics is the first viable commercial test of the system, and its success was the subject of a major feature on NBC’s Nightly News last year.
“We’re getting some really smart people to help us as we move our urban agriculture system to the next level,” said Mayor Tom Barrett. According to Sweet Water co-founder James Godsil, Milwaukee won the award, “…by virtue of our commitment to learning to feed ourselves.”
Both Sweet Water Organics and Growing Power provide a source of fresh vegetables, perch and tilapia to a growing number of Milwaukee markets and area restaurants, as well as providing jobs and educational opportunities to a diverse urban population. Local partnerships also include breweries that provide mash compost to these urban farms.
