Milwaukee Named One of America’s Five Most Underrated Cities

City cited as younger, more vibrant and fun

MILWAUKEE – Aug. 8, 2011 – Milwaukee was featured recently in Yahoo’s real estate section as one of “America’s Five Most Underrated Cities.” Milwaukee’s changing population trends show that the city is becoming younger, more vibrant and fun, making it a top choice for the list.

The article cites several indicators of Milwaukee’s youth movement including recent appearances on the Daily Beast’s list of the Best 50 Cities for Love and Forbes’ list of Best Cities for Singles. Between the powerhouse arts scene, diverse cultural offerings and having the most restaurants, bars and clubs per capita in the country behind Las Vegas, it’s no wonder Milwaukee’s median age of 30.3 is now well below the national average of 36.8.

“Many people still carry a perception of Milwaukee that is representative of 30 years ago,” said Paul Upchurch, President and CEO of VISIT Milwaukee. “When they visit, however, they are surprised to find a metropolitan city buzzing with things to do, exceeding their expectations.”

Several of Milwaukee’s most alluring attractions are listed in the article including the stunning Santiago Calatrava-designed Quadracci Pavilion at the Milwaukee Art Museum, Alterra Coffee, Lakefront Brewery, Miller Park and more, all of which contribute to Milwaukee’s GDP of $83 billion, a growth of $4.1 billion since 2006.

Other cities that made the list are Chicago, Pittsburgh, New Orleans and Buffalo.
