Family Summer Fun

To Do

An easy, affordable family vacation is waiting in Milwaukee this summer! Lake Michigan and over 15,000 acres of parkland set the stage for breezy outdoor fun that the entire family will enjoy. Whether you’re looking for a weekend getaway or just an afternoon out, get the kids out of the house and soak up some summer fun.

Get a much-needed dose of fresh air exploring local parks and trails. Milwaukee has plenty of options for outdoor fun. Take a stroll or bike ride along the coast of Lake Michigan or bring older kids for a more challenging hike at Lapham Peak State Park. Downtown in Veterans Park, you'll find kites for sale at Gift of Wings Kite Shop as well as surreys, bikes, paddleboats, and more available for rent at Wheel Fun Rentals. While you’re at the Lakefront, enjoy the native prairies and paved paths at Lakeshore State Park, jutting out behind the Henry W. Maier Festival Grounds.

At Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, you can experience the diversity of Wisconsin’s outdoor world through forests, wetlands, restored prairies, ravines, bluffs, and Lake Michigan shoreline. And every kid loves a visit to the Milwaukee County Zoo

Art lovers will love exploring Sculpture Milwaukee, an outdoor art gallery that stretches along Wisconsin Avenue as well as into the Historic Third Ward. World-class sculptures will be installed in early June to be enjoyed all summer and fall. Check out Sculpture Milwaukee’s website for self-guided tour options, virtual art talks, and more throughout the summer!

Milwaukee is also home to a number of permanent murals and outdoor sculptures – you can find a map of downtown’s public art here. Try picking a neighborhood and planning your own walking or driving tour of the city’s colorful walls!
If you’re planning a day outside, why not plan on a to-go picnic from one of Milwaukee’s independent restaurants? Takeout or curbside pickup makes it easy to enjoy old favorites or somewhere new wherever you prefer to dine. A stop at a frozen custard stand for a sweet treat is always a must on a hot day – Milwaukee is known as the frozen custard capital of the world, after all!
