Outdoor Adventure For All Ages

It's time to run, play, and get some fresh air! In Milwaukee, we've never believed you need to leave the city behind to experience the great outdoors. Wisconsin's only urban state park, miles of lakefront parks and beaches, bike trails, urban kayaking, and more: it's all here just waiting for your family to enjoy! Mix and match this fun itinerary for the perfect outdoor adventure for your family - and don't forget to star your favorites to save them to your trip for later.

Morning on the Shore

Start your day at Colectivo Lakefront - built inside the historic Milwaukee River Flushing Station, this unique cafe serves locally roasted coffee as well as breakfast sandwiches, pastries, soups, and more made from scratch. Kids will love fresh muffins and smoothies, and the expansive outdoor patio has beautiful views of the lake.

After breakfast, take some time to enjoy Milwaukee's lakefront. In Veterans Park, you'll find lots of family-friendly recreational rentals like bikes, surreys, paddleboats, segways, and more at Wheel Fun Rentals. Get the kids some wheels (or pile the whole family into a triple surrey) and use the paved multi-use trails to zip around the lakefront. Head south to check out lakefront museums like the Milwaukee Art Museum and Discovery World, or head north to find Bradford Beach, one of the nation's top urban beaches and a major summer hotspot for all ages.

For Curious Critters

After lunch on one of the many patios that line the Milwaukee RiverWalk, head to one of the Urban Ecology Center's three locations for a fun, hands-on look at urban nature. The Riverside Park branch is home to live animals, informational exhibits, and a habitat-themed playground that kids love set in a historic park. Or visit Wehr Nature Center, where your family can explore over five mails of trails, check out an indoor beehive and active aquaponics display, and play on an “all-natural playground” with tree stumps and rocks for climbing and a log cabin playhouse. Both nature centers offer a wide range of family events, ranging from “Owl Prowl” guided hikes to a Young Scientists Club – make sure to check out upcoming events when you’re planning your trip with your young outdoor adventurers!

For Lake Lovers

You’ve admired the lake from the shore – now it’s time to get out on the water! If your family is ready to get active, rent some kayaks or a canoe to explore the rivers. No experience is necessary – paddlers of all kinds can set off on guided paddles or solo expeditions with Milwaukee Kayak Company and Brew City Kayak.

If you’re picturing a more relaxing vacation, don’t worry! There’s no shortage of river cruises and boat trips that don’t ask you to do anything but sit back and enjoy the scenery. Kids love joining the “crew” on Edelweiss Boats’ interactive pirate cruise and defending the boat with water balloons and squirters. Or enjoy a narrated sightseeing tour with Milwaukee Boat Line complete with local Klements brats and hot dogs for an afternoon snack.

A Little Night Music

Close out your night at one of the many free outdoor concerts that take place in Milwaukee’s parks. Popular concert series like Jazz in the Park, Chill on the Hill, and Tosa Tonight take place almost every night of the week. (Check out a full line-up!) Pack a blanket and maybe some camp chairs, then pick up dinner and drinks from local food trucks and vendors. Enjoy great music, warm weather, and totally tired-out kids at the end of a full day of outdoor family fun in Milwaukee.
