The health of our community depends on a strong tourism economy

Driven by leisure and convention business, direct visitor spending in Milwaukee County in 2024 grew 4.1% year-over-year, surpassing the domestic inflation rate by 2.3% and contributing $2.439 billion to the local economy. The Greater Milwaukee area set another all-time tourism spending record with a $6.632 billion total economic impact in 2024, according to data released by the Wisconsin Department of Tourism.

In 2024 in Milwaukee County:

  • Direct visitor spending totaled $2.439 billion – up 4.1% from 2023
  • Tourism supported 28,091 full-time jobs – up 3.2% from 2023
  • Labor Income from tourism totaled $1.402 billion – up 3.4% from 2023
  • State and local taxes generated from tourism totaled $242.2 million – up 4.8% from 2023
  • Total business sales because of tourism totaled $4.321 billion – up 3.7% from 2023

In the four-county Greater Milwaukee area:

  • Direct visitor spending totaled $3.676 billion - up 4% from 2023
  • Tourism supported 45,208 full-time jobs - up 3% from 2023
  • Labor income from tourism totaled $2.086 billion - up 3% from 2023
  • State and local taxes generated from tourism totaled $369 million -  up 4% from 2023
  • Total business sales because of tourism in the Greater Milwaukee area totaled $6.632 billion – up 4% from 2023

According to 2024 data from Tourism Economics, a typical Milwaukee County visitor stays 1.1 days, 68.9% of visitors stay overnight and 62.1% are repeat trips. The majority (59.7%) of visitors traveled between 50 and 199 miles to Milwaukee, and the most common place of origin for visitors is metropolitan Chicago (20.3%), though 2024 marked a year for growth in key out-of-state markets, including Minneapolis-St. Paul and Des Moines, Iowa, all of which are major target markets for Visit Milwaukee's marketing efforts.

  • Tax Generation: In 2024, tourism in Milwaukee County generated $242.2 million in tax revenue, offsetting the taxes Milwaukeeans would otherwise have to make up for.
