Volunteer Position Description

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Greet all visitors with a friendly smile. Not all visitors will approach a volunteer with questions but everyone appreciates a welcoming smile.
  2. Assist visitors by answering questions and requests for information in a friendly and accurate manner.
  3. Ensure that visitors receive answers to their questions. For additional assistance direct visitors to VISIT Milwaukee resources including: www.visitmilwaukee.org, Official Visitors Guide, the Wisconsin Center Visitor Information Kiosk, or VISIT Milwaukee staff person.
  4. Learn about the group/convention in attendance by visiting their website (web address will be provided by the Volunteer Coordinator).
  5. Be punctual and conscientious in meeting volunteer obligations. Inform the Volunteer Coordinator of schedule changes or other problems.
  6. Represent VISIT Milwaukee in a professional manner at all times.
  7. Become familiar with the sites where volunteers may be assigned including the Wisconsin Center, area attractions, hotels, and restaurants.


Time Commitment:

Willingness to commit a minimum of ten hours annually, with the average shift of four hours.


Age Requirement:

The minimum age requirement for volunteers is 18 years of age.


Volunteer Qualifications:

  1. A passion for assisting visitors to discover and experience Milwaukee.
  2. Outgoing and friendly personality. 
  3. Patience and a desire to meet and work cooperatively with people from many backgrounds.
  4. Ability to listen to and understand questions, problems and situations.
  5. A good basic knowledge of the Greater Milwaukee area, particularly downtown.
  6. Ability to communicate simple directions verbally or in writing.
  7. Ability to walk and/or stand for extended periods of time. (Occasionally there may be opportunities to sit for part of a shift but in general, volunteers will be on their feet for the majority of the time).


Meet & Greet: welcome visitors and answer questions about area attractions, hotels, restaurants, etc. This activity usually takes place in the Wisconsin Center during conventions.

Directional Assistance: assist visitors in navigating Milwaukee (especially downtown) and offer information about public transportation options. This activity usually takes place in the Wisconsin Center during conventions.

Registration Assistance: hand out registration bags and/or information packets to convention/event attendees.

Welcome Table: staff an information table and answer questions/offer suggestions about area attractions, hotels, restaurants, etc. This activity usually takes place at the General Mitchell International Airport or at large events taking place at locations other than the Wisconsin Center.

Convention Bag Stuffing: assist with pre-convention and event preparations by filling registration bags for attendees.

Event Helpers: Assist in a variety of ways with large Milwaukee events. VISIT Milwaukee
