Discover the Historic Elegance of the Pabst Mansion in Milwaukee
Stepping into the Pabst Mansion is like walking into a Milwaukee time warp. It’s the manifestation of the days when beer barons helped build the city and left behind architectural monuments to what they accomplished. Here’s an overview of what to expect when you visit, but to truly appreciate its beauty, you simply have to see things for yourself.
The Story Behind the Pabst Mansion
The Pabst Mansion looks every bit as sophisticated as when it was completed in 1892. Capt. Frederick Pabst and his wife, Maria, made their mansion in Milwaukee a symbol of high society. It was fitting, given how important beer and breweries were to Milwaukee’s German heritage and the city’s economic growth. The mansion hosted many parties, receptions and—eventually—funerals for Frederick and Maria before the family sold it in 1908.
Next, it served as the home of the archbishop of Milwaukee’s Roman Catholic Archdiocese until 1975. A subsequent sale almost saw it demolished in favor of a neighboring hotel’s parking lot, but preservation efforts saved it. It was placed on the National Historic Register of Places in 1975 and, in 1978, opened as a museum for the public. Restoration efforts returned the mansion to its Gilded Age glory.
Architectural Charm & Design
The Pabst Mansion takes you back to a time when detailed work and European-style shaped architecture. The three-story, Flemish Renaissance Revival-style masterpiece showcases stained glass windows and detailed woodwork, making everything from hallway doors to stairway banisters a sight to behold.
Period artwork, furnishings and other decorations add to the aura of prosperity. It’s easy to imagine Maria at the writing desk in her personal sitting room, penning her latest letter in front of the fireplace covered in pink marble.
Choose Your Own Mansion Experience
You can savor everything during one of the mansion’s many tours. Accompany a docent as they share stories about the Pabst family and the timeless home they built and furnished. Or take a self-guided tour at your own pace, knowing on-site experts are around to answer questions you might have.
The mansion even offers Sunday mimosa tours and themed tours all year round, including ones that focus on the brewing industry and have a Pabst Blue Ribbon toast. Shorter, family-friendly tours and longer, more in-depth tours that take you behind the ropes and closed doors are also available.
Special Events & Seasonal Traditions
The Pabst Mansion also hosts many events and exhibits throughout the year while providing an extra touch of celebration. The Christmas season sees the mansion fully decked out with trees, trains and all things nostalgic. Other seasonal events pay homage to Oktoberfest, Valentine’s Day, Women’s History Month and more, so there’s always something new to explore. Find your next Pabst Mansion event below!
