Escape to Lake Park in Milwaukee
It’s hard to believe that one of the city’s most peaceful and scenic green spaces can be tucked into Milwaukee’s bustling East Side. But stroll through Lake Park on a warm, sunny day, and you’d swear the wind carries contented sighs from park designer Frederick Law Olmstead–the man who designed New York City’s Central Park–whose vision has endured so long after the park’s 1889 debut. Read on to learn what’s made it such a cherished spot for so many generations of Milwaukeeans, then plan your own visit.
Nature Walks & Outdoor Fun
Lake Park is the perfect setting for time spent outdoors, be it active or leisurely, alone or in the company of others. You could spend a day on nature walks through woodlands and meadows with trees and wildflowers galore. The park’s paved paths and wooden bridges are part of the Oak Leaf Trail, a 135-mile network that connects Milwaukee’s parks and green spaces.
Follow the path to the Lake Park Waterfall, originally a WPA project that was rededicated in 2010, and know that a gorgeous vista of Lake Michigan might await just beyond the next tree. Marvel at the Grand Staircase that takes you down the lake’s main bluff and the arches of the Ravine Road Bridge. The park is also renowned for its birdwatching, so be sure to bring your binoculars.
If you’re looking for something more active, Lake Park features an 18-hole par-3 golf course that’s easily walkable, as well as tennis courts and a family-friendly playground. It’s also home to meticulously maintained greens for lawn bowling and croquet. In warmer weather, you’ll spy tai chi classes and baseball, soccer, rugby, and ultimate frisbee games, while colder weather attracts ice skaters and snowshoers.
Discover North Point Lighthouse & Lake Park Bistro
No Lake Park visit is complete without seeing the North Point Lighthouse. Tour the grounds and museum exhibits to learn of a history that dates back to 1855, and climb to the top of the lighthouse for a spectacular view. Stop by the gift shop and take home a book that delves further into the Great Lakes’ history or a souvenir to remind you of your visit.
Just a short stroll from the lighthouse, Lake Park Bistro offers an elegant dining experience with stunning views—perfect for a post-walk meal or a special occasion. This award-winning restaurant brings French-inspired cuisine to the heart of the park and is a destination in its own right.
Lake Park is a true gem of an experience, seemingly purpose-built to welcome nature lovers, couples, and families all at once. Make some time to escape, relax, and play among its natural splendor, and be sure to check out the many other beaches and parks in the Milwaukee area that are just waiting to be discovered.
