Choose the escape that calls to you and see where the season takes you.

The Cultural Explorer:

Glendale & the North Shore

Located in Milwaukee’s North Shore area, Glendale anchors a collection of seven distinctive communities, each with its own local character. The neighborhood offers quick access to downtown, along with shopping, dining and parks that make it an easy and enjoyable basecamp for a winter getaway.

If you love culture, craft and cozy escapes, Glendale is your perfect starting point. Settle in at Residence Inn Milwaukee North/Glendale, where thoughtful touches and inviting spaces make it easy to unwind between adventures. Spend an afternoon at Sprecher Brewery tasting iconic sodas and craft beers or lace up your boots for a snowy hike through the quiet trails of the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center.

When you’re ready for a change of pace, make your way to Bayshore, where national retailers mix with local favorites, and winter events bring extra energy to the season. As evening settles in, choose a meal that matches your mood with hearty German fare at the Bavarian Bierhaus, comforting pub classics at The Brick or a refined dinner at MOXIE Food + Drink.

The Family-Friendly Stay:

Wauwatosa

Bordering Milwaukee to the west, Wauwatosa has the character of a small town wrapped inside a thriving city neighborhood. The Village sits at its heart, lined with boutiques, bakeries and family-owned restaurants that bring people together all winter long. It’s the kind of place where every corner has a story and every visit feels familiar in the best way.

Wauwatosa is winter made magical for families. Check in at the Renaissance Milwaukee West Hotel, a cozy home base that keeps you close to everything you want to explore. Start your morning with warm donuts from Cranky Al’s, a neighborhood favorite that sets the tone for a day of simple joys and small adventures.

Visit Firefly Grove Park to see “Mama Rosa,” the whimsical troll sculpture by Danish artist Thomas Dambo, then spend the afternoon sledding down the park’s hill. When it is time to warm up, wander through the Village of Wauwatosa and discover shops and boutiques tucked into the historic streets. Step inside Ruckus & Glee, a winter wonderland of toys and games where kids can browse and dream while you explore nearby stores for your own finds.

As the day winds down, keep dinner relaxed and fun. Enjoy American classics like burgers and fries at Crafty Cow, settle into Buckatabon’s outdoor winter shanties for a cozy meal or explore other Village spots that blend flavor with a friendly atmosphere.

The Comfort Seeker:

Brookfield

In Brookfield, winter weekends come with plenty of options. Shopping centers glow with storefront lights, local restaurants fill tables with comfort food and conversation, and live performances give the season a little extra shine. About fifteen minutes west of downtown Milwaukee, the city combines space, style and easy access to everything the region offers.

Your home away from home starts at the Courtyard & Residence Inn by Marriott Milwaukee/Brookfield at Poplar Creek, surrounded by dining, shopping and entertainment. As evening falls, the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts takes the spotlight with concerts, theater and dance that make winter nights sparkle.

During the day, you can explore at your own pace. Grab a coffee and stroll through The Corners of Brookfield, where open-air walkways, local boutiques and inviting restaurants create a relaxed pace perfect for winter. If you prefer to stay warm inside, Brookfield Square Mall gives you plenty to browse, from familiar favorites to a few surprises tucked between the big names.

Dinner in Brookfield is easy to look forward to. You might dress up for a perfectly cooked steak and a glass of wine at Mr. B’s – A BARTOLOTTA Steakhouse, or keep things casual with deep-dish pizza at Lou Malnati’s shared between friends. Kopp’s for frozen custard, a Milwaukee classic that always hits the spot.

The Adventure & Flavor Trail:

South Milwaukee

South Milwaukee and its neighbors, Franklin, Oak Creek, Greendale and Greenfield, trace the city’s southern edge, where factory skylines meet quiet neighborhoods and open parkland. It’s the kind of place where work and recreation share the same map, and the pace slows just enough to notice what’s around you.

Stay at Staybridge Suites Milwaukee Airport South or Four Points Milwaukee Airport & Conference Center, close to where city streets stretch into open air. Start the morning at Crystal Ridge in Franklin, where skiers carve fresh tracks and families race down tubing lanes, laughter carrying across the hill. The drive north brings you to Greendale, a village built with symmetry and charm in mind, its storefronts filled with bakeries, coffee shops and independent boutiques.

Oak Creek’s Lake Vista Park offers one of the area’s best winter walks with a trail that traces the bluff and opens to a skyline of water and light. South Milwaukee picks up that sense of calm and turns it inward, its Performing Arts Center glowing with theater, concerts and community shows through the colder months. Together they give this side of the city a rhythm all its own, part fresh air, part stage light.

For dinner, Cubanitas brings the color of the Caribbean to Oak Creek with ropa vieja and fried plantains served hot against the cold. A few miles north, The Packing House glows against the night, serving prime rib, Friday fish fry and Brandy Old Fashioneds that taste like Milwaukee history.

The Romantic Heritage Escape:

Cedarburg

About twenty miles north of Milwaukee, Cedarburg could have been lifted straight from a Hallmark movie. Historic limestone buildings line Washington Avenue, their windows glowing against the snow while the scent of roasted coffee and baked goods drifts through the air. It is cozy without trying to be, the kind of town that looks festive even on an ordinary winter afternoon.

Drop your bags at the Washington House Inn, a restored 19th-century bed and breakfast where fireplaces, antique furnishings and exposed brick create an atmosphere that feels both elegant and familiar. From there, head to the Cedar Creek Settlement, a cluster of artisan studios and boutique shops housed inside a former woolen mill.

Between sips and shopping, you can browse handmade jewelry and locally crafted art while snow collects outside the old stone walls. For a bite, Anvil Pub & Grille serves wood-fired dishes inside a converted blacksmith shop, while Cream & Crepe Café pairs delicate crepes with rich coffee in a space made for lingering. By the time you step back outside, the snow has settled again, softening the streets beneath the glow of the shop windows.
