A Day with Green Bay Packers Legend LeRoy Butler

It’s one small step for LeRoy, one giant leap for the visitor experience in Milwaukee! Green Bay Packers legend, Super Bowl XXXI champion, NFL Hall of Famer and inventor of the iconic Lambeau Leap made a career of covering the best wide receivers in the game and coming up with game-changing picks in big moments. Adopting Milwaukee as his hometown after he retired in 2001, LeRoy knows a thing or two about the Brew City. And now he’s got you covered with everything you need to make the most of your visit to our city. All you need to do is Ask LeRoy.

We did, and these are his picks for his perfect day in Milwaukee! So, if you don’t wanna work, and you just wanna bang on your drum all day, you should leap this way.

Vendetta Coffee Bar - Coffee & Pastries

Breakfast: Vendetta Coffee Bar Bay View

LeRoy has a natural zeal for life and an energy that is best described as pre-caffeinated, so this morning ritual is as much about ambiance and vibe as it is about coffee and a sweet treat. Luckily, Vendetta has both. Drawing inspiration (and a menu) from Italian cafes, this coffee bar offers a wide selection of expertly crafted drinks and imported bakery in a warm, cozy, wood-ensconced setting

Milwaukee Art Museum

You’ve kicked off the day, the sun’s rising high in the sky, and you’re looking for something inspiring. Well, we won’t say the Milwaukee Art Museum inspired LeRoy to create the Lambeau Leap (mostly because the Calatrava wasn’t finished until he retired), but it’s as awe-inspiring as watching him grab yet another interception. Marvel as the ornate Burke Brise-Soleil wings flap when the museum opens, then head inside to wander the over 40 galleries featuring world-renowned artists like Picasso, O’Keeffe, and Kandinsky inside this architectural gem.

Oak Leaf Trail

Now 25 years retired from the league, LeRoy still loves to get outside and get moving. You can follow the multipurpose path from underneath the cathedral-like Calatrava panes inside the museum, but now it’s time to get out there and explore it for yourself. To the east, you can roam Veterans Park and McKinley Park, leading to 135 miles of trails that wind their way throughout Milwaukee County. To the west, you can discover the spectacular skyline views and seasonal hues at Lakeshore State Park. Walk or run, roll or stroll, there’s no wrong way to do it.

Ice Skating at the Slice of Ice in Red Arrow Park

If it’s a little too chilly to wander the lapping shores of Lake Michigan, you can slide into winter fun at a skating rink like the Slice of Ice in Red Arrow Park. The downtown skating rink’s location gives it incredible cityscape views throughout the season. You can skate on in for free if you bring your own pair of skates or rent them from the warming house and glide across the horizon.

Lunch: Milwaukee Public Market

One of LeRoy’s favorite aspects of Milwaukee is the sheer variety you’ll find around every corner and nowhere showcases this better than the Milwaukee Public Market. Whether you’re looking for a pastrami sandwich or spicy Thai food, fresh fish or a gourmet brat, a glass of wine or a chocolate-covered pretzel, it’s all right here under one roof. You could come back for breakfast, lunch and dinner or a meal every day and still find exactly what you’re craving. Make a pick, grab a bite and take it to the second floor’s dining space to relax and eat it with the energetic buzz of the market bustling in the background.

Amped Milwaukee

Now fueled up, reenergized and ready to take on the afternoon, it’s time to put your skills to the test at Amped MKE. The Bars & Rec locations have two different experiences for you to enjoy:

Private Karaoke

Dig deep and find your voice on your own episode of “American Idol” with your friends. Amped’s private karaoke suites let you sing your heart out to your favorite tunes during two-hour blocks, meaning you and all your friends can skip the long sign-up sheet and big crowds at karaoke bars and get right in tune with the music you love (even if they sing out of tune). LeRoy suggests “Bang the Drum All Day” by Todd Rundgren, but the real choice is in your hands.

Game Show MKE

While LeRoy hasn’t hosted “Jeopardy” or appeared on “Dancing with the Stars,” at this unique family-friendly experience, he can be a part of this competition that’s a little bit of all your favorite game shows wrapped up in one. It’s part “Family Feud,” part “Jeopardy” and all fun. Divide your group into two teams and let the competitive juices flow.

Dinner: Carnevor

One of LeRoy’s favorite restaurants in the city, this upscale dining experience brings top-tier steaks fit for MVPs, Super Bowl champions and you. Known for their melt-in-your-mouth meats, expertly prepared, perfectly seasoned and set in a warm, chic environment, this is where the tastemakers go to dine in style. Make your reservation ahead of time, then revel in your fancy feast.

Game Time: Milwaukee Bucks Basketball Game

He may have spent over a decade with the Green Bay Packers, but LeRoy supports Milwaukee’s sports scene, too. The longtime safety is a regular at Milwaukee Bucks games, cheering the Deer inside one of the world’s best arenas, Fiserv Forum. With an exciting young team built for the future, the Bucks bring the energy of a roaring crowd, showing teams around the league a reason to fear the Deer.

Post-Game Drinks: Tom’s Watch Bar

After a big Bucks win, there’s no place to recap the action, relive the magic and keep the momentum rolling than at Tom’s Watch Bar. Located in Deer District Plaza, right across from Fiserv Forum, the bar is home to an enormous, 38-foot big screen TV and an unparalleled gameday atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re front row at a Bucks game, a Packers game or really any game on one of their 100+ TVs.

That’s LeRoy Butler’s dream day in Milwaukee. What do you say we plan yours? All you have to do is Ask Leroy, Visit Milwaukee’s new digital concierge, and you can map your perfect place to grab a bite, see the sights and take your trip to new heights.\
