Halt! All who seek passage to the Visit Milwaukee blog must answer a riddle.
In the green fields of a new park,
I’ll rest and make my Tosa mark.
Four seasons, by night and by day,
Watching visitors picnic and play.
Tell me then, dear reader of the blog
What creature do you see in the fog?
If your answer is a wooden troll sculpture by the one and only Thomas Dambo, you may pass. If not, we’ll let it slide…this time.
On Tuesday, August 6, the Wauwatosa Tourism Commission announced an exciting new feature for the upcoming park on 116th Street: a giant troll sculpture. Created by the internationally acclaimed artist Thomas Dambo, this impressive piece is set to become a unique landmark in Wauwatosa when it arrives in spring 2025.
Known for his whimsical, larger-than-life sculptures crafted from recycled materials, Thomas Dambo has captivated audiences around the world with his imaginative creations. With over 135 troll sculptures worldwide, 32 in the U.S. alone, these wooden carvings of the mischievous mythical creatures have become popular tourist attractions, driving visitors to explore new destinations as they marvel at the larger-than-life trolls. This installation will be Dambo’s first piece in Wisconsin, with the ultimate goal of adding a troll in every state.
The towering troll will not only enhance Wauwatosa’s status as a vibrant arts destination but also highlight the city’s commitment to dynamic public art and engaging public spaces. By showcasing Dambo’s eco-friendly approach, the sculpture will inspire residents and visitors alike to consider environmentally conscious choices.
As the giant troll gets ready to move into its home at the new park, you can feel the magic of Wauwatosa as you explore the enchanting murals, public art all over town and the Midwest's largest bracket-style live painting tournament, ART 64, alongside the charming boutique shops and artisan goods found along the streets in the Village of Wauwatosa. Start counting down the days to Wisconsin’s first troll and plan your Wauwatosa adventure today!
