Explore Milwaukee’s Crisol Corridor
A Culturally Diverse Melting Pot
The Crisol Corridor, located about 10 minutes south of downtown Milwaukee, is a place where culture and camaraderie blend into distinctly memorable experiences. Centered at the intersection of South 13th Street and West Oklahoma Avenue, and under the guidance of Business Improvement District 50 (BID 50), the corridor welcomes visitors to explore and enjoy its many offerings.
Crisol means “melting pot” in Spanish, and the moniker reflects the cultural diversity of the corridor’s Polonia, Morgandale and Bay View neighborhoods, including the influence of their Mexican, Polish, Italian and South Asian residents. Here’s just a taste of what awaits when you plan your trip down the corridor.
Supporting a Stronger South Side
The Crisol Corridor stretches north-south along South 13th Street from Cleveland to Morgan avenues, and east-west along West Oklahoma Avenue from South Sixth Street to Chase Avenue. The district is continually enhanced through beautification projects, cultural initiatives and community engagement that support both residents and local businesses. These ongoing efforts highlight the area’s diversity while celebrating neighborhood pride and progress.
Colorful banners, emblazoned with a red heart at the center of a yellow sun, hang from light poles and a large mural depicting that heart and sun floats above Milwaukee, gracing the corner of 13th and Oklahoma, an artistic display of local passion for the corridor.
Where Culture Meets Cuisine
When it comes to the food scene, variety is the corridor’s calling card. Crisol Corridor restaurants, cafes, bakeries and grocers represent a multicultural trip around the world, including a plethora of Mexican, Indian, Italian and traditional American fare.
Discover why locals swear by the vegetarian Indian cuisine of Bombay Sweets. Find deep-dish at Rosati’s Chicago Pizza, or opt for Karina’s Pizza if you prefer a thinner crust. Add to that the bold flavors of Taqueria Arandas or El Tucanazo Taqueria and Seafood for a well-rounded dining tour.
If you’re not quite in the mood for a full meal, the area still has plenty to offer. Treat yourself to delicious cakes and sweets at Mexican bakeries like Todo Postres and Azteca Bakery, or cool off with a cone at the La Michoacana Plus ice cream shop. Stop in for delicious coffee at Brew-Jas, explore the curated offerings at Urbal Tea, or relax with a cold one at Latin tavern Mal De Amores.
And reserve a few minutes to walk the aisles at some of the grocery stores and find your new secret ingredient. Attari Supermarket delivers hard-to-find Middle Eastern, India, Pakistani and Turkish products. Monterrey Market is a full-service grocer that specializes in Latino ingredients, while Tortilleria El Sol is the place to find the freshest tortillas in town.
Local Shops, Services, & Everyday Finds
In addition to the variety of services you’d expect from a typical neighborhood, Crisol Corridor is home to many locally owned retail and specialty stores worth a visit.
Find your inner Old West self at El Rancho Western Wear or your next instrument to play at Lincoln Music House. Browse the beautiful formalwear inside Variedades Gonzalez, or stop by La Guadalupana Novedades for gifts geared toward weddings, baby showers, communions and baptisms.
Wherever you shop, know that doing so at a local small business means getting personalized service while also supporting the community.
The Crisol Corridor is an example of what can happen when businesses and residents come together to move their community forward. See the progress for yourself while enjoying the corridor’s multicultural offerings by planning your visit today.
