Bronzeville/Historic King Drive
Bronzeville is an important cultural and entertainment district in Milwaukee comprised of five distinct neighborhoods: Harambee, Halyard Park, Brewers Hill, Hay Market and 5 Points. Historically significant as a major economic and social hub for African Americans, Bronzeville fostered a thriving community centered around jazz, blues and the arts from the early 1900s through the 1960s.
Bronzeville continues to reinvest in its community with charitable investments from local organizations to go toward its redevelopment and honor the area’s rich heritage. Today, we see annual festivals and a thriving main thoroughfare, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive (King Drive), lined with African-American-owned businesses. Come and explore the diverse dining, shopping and cultural experiences Bronzeville and its neighborhoods offer.
Supported by about $400 million of redevelopment funds from organizations like the Historic King Drive BID, P3 Development Group and Maures Development Group.
Top Things to Do & Attractions
The New York Times claims Bronzeville to be the center of African American culture for good reason, with the reopening of a historic museum and buzzing Black-owned shops and businesses that continue to expand today.
Begin your exploration at the Bronzeville Collective MKE, a cooperative showcasing local Black artisans and entrepreneurs. Here, you can purchase unique crafts, art, and fashion while supporting the local community.
King Drive is home to a variety of Black-owned businesses, offering a fun day of shopping. For a holistic shopping experience, visit the HoneyBee Sage Apothecary & Wellness Cafe, where you can find natural health and beauty products, as well as enjoy a relaxing cafe atmosphere. On Saturdays, stop by 414loral to create your own beautiful bouquet. The shop also offers flower delivery and in-store pickup. Don't miss Voluptuous Secrets, a lingerie boutique providing plus-size intimate apparel and swimwear.
History buffs will appreciate a visit to America's Black Holocaust Museum. Through exhibits, galleries, and self-guided tours, the museum details the 400-year history of captured Africans and their descendants, offering crucial insights into the foundational impact of Black Americans on the Bronzeville community.
Discover Restaurants & Cafes
Dining in Bronzeville is an experience, with Black-owned restaurants serving up soul food that warms the heart and delights the palate.
Rise & Grind Cafe on King Drive is a local favorite, offering a cozy atmosphere and a menu that includes everything from robust coffee blends to hearty breakfasts and lunches. Pilcrow Coffee provides a unique coffee experience with a full tasting room featuring multiple cold brews on tap and a complete coffee menu. Pilcrow Coffee roasts its coffees in-house and makes all of its own syrups and sauces.
For those craving classic American eats with a side of fun and live music, Garfield's 502 is the perfect spot. Another can’t-miss restaurant is Mi Casa Su Cafe, which offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We also highly recommend Bronzeville Kitchen & Lounge on King Drive, where the southern fried catfish keeps diners returning for more. Another King Drive staple, SkyBox Sports Bar, is a popular spot for catching a game and grabbing a bite to eat.
