Milwaukee's Near West Side

Milwaukee’s Near West Side comprises the Avenues West, Cold Spring Park, Concordia, Martin Drive, Merrill Park, Miller Valley, and Piggsville neighborhoods. These vibrant, diverse neighborhoods are steeped in history while buzzing with fresh energy, offering a mix of classic architecture, innovative dining and entertainment. Anchored by one of the nation’s top universities, it’s a hub of activity and culture. Read on to uncover the unique character of this distinctive area and discover some must-visit spots.

What to See & Do

Explore Marquette University

You don’t need to enroll at Marquette University to enjoy a day on its gorgeous campus, which perfectly balances relaxing green spaces with striking examples of Gothic and contemporary architecture.

Be sure to visit the Haggerty Museum of Art, renowned for its collection of photography and European works. Another must-see is the St. Joan of Arc Chapel, a breathtaking 15th-century French chapel relocated to this Catholic, Jesuit university. It provides a peaceful setting for reflection, with regular Masses open to the public during the spring and fall semesters when classes are in session. Afterward, enjoy a tranquil walk through the surrounding gardens.

Historic & Cultural Attractions

The neighborhood is also home to top cultural attractions. The Pabst Mansion, built in 1892, is an homage to famed Milwaukee beer baron Capt. Frederick Pabst and his wife, Maria. Tour the museum and get a Gilded Age glimpse of its classic craftsmanship and artistic accoutrements. The beautifully distinctive Tripoli Shrine Center holds a spot on the National Register of Historic Places and offers tours and hosts events, while the Hmong American Friendship Association and Museum serves as a supportive hub for Milwaukee’s large Southeast Asian community.

Events & Nightlife

If you’re looking to enjoy Milwaukee nightlife, catch a show at the famed The Rave/Eagles Club. For nearly a century, the simultaneously grand and intimate space has hosted the biggest names in entertainment, from Glenn Miller and Bob Hope to Bob Dylan and Imagine Dragons.

Work & Create

If your travel plans require a productive touch, check out Fruition, a modern co-working space, makerspace and café offering day passes for all your business needs. Looking to host an event or enjoy a curated experience? The Denizen | MKE provides a stylish and versatile space with contemporary design and artistic ambiance, making it a standout destination in the neighborhood.

Where to Stay

The Ambassador Hotel is something of an Art Deco time machine, delivering a combination of comfort and service that might make you think twice about leaving your room. Resist the urge to stay in so you don’t miss the tasty coffee and treats at Deco Café or the pre-prohibition mixology expertise at Gin Ricky.

Where to Eat & Drink

If comfort food is on your mind, the West Side has you covered. Miss Katie’s Diner is a blast from the past that welcomes regulars and newcomers for classic breakfasts and homey meals all day. Daddy’s Soul Food is the place for unforgettable barbecue ribs, baked and fried chicken, catfish and delicious sides that might require loosening a notch or two on the belt. Meanwhile, Buffalo Boss puts the focus squarely on all-natural chicken wings and sandwiches, with a tantalizing selection of sweet, savory and spicy sauces.

For more upscale dining, head for the Five O’Clock Steakhouse, a favorite local spot for perfectly prepared prime cuts. Or savor the contemporary takes on classic plates at the Fitz, located in the Ambassador Hotel and so named as a nod to F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Before you leave town, pay a visit to Pete’s Pops and try one of their 70 rotating flavors of popsicles. But no judgment here if you can’t stop at one.
