Grant Park

A Fresh Look at a Hidden Gem

It may be over 110 years old, but strolling Grant Park is like being in one of Milwaukee’s freshest secrets. It’s a backstage pass to some of the area’s most picturesque vistas, a flourishing woodland nestled against the natural beauty of Lake Michigan’s shore. And it’s far enough away to escape the bustle around downtown but close enough in South Milwaukee for a spontaneous trip that will have you back in time for dinner. Milwaukee’s having its moment, and Grant Park is the perfect place for a few peaceful, stretch-those-legs moments of your own.

Park History

Grant Park, the oldest park in Milwaukee County and a haven for visitors since 1910, has grown with the times. What began as a golf getaway has slowly evolved to attract trail-walkers, beachgoers and those who simply want to relax with a burger and shake in the company of nature. Today, it’s home to nearly 400 acres that beckon to families and children, couples and soloists alike. Those accepting its exploration invitation will find playgrounds and ballfields, soothing waves and babbling brooks and the accompanying chorus of Wisconsin’s flora and fauna.

18-Hole Golf

Swing into Milwaukee County’s first 18-hole golf course, which has welcomed duffers and aces alike since 1920. Its clubhouse predates even that, built as a farmhouse in 1892, and it still retains that old-school charm. Though Grant Park Golf Course measures only 5,200 yards from the tips, a solid mix of trees and hazards make you work for that Par 68, and it’s a course worthy of your Wisconsin golfing checklist. Just be sure, as you head up 18, to spare a glance at that Lake Michigan view.

Grant Park Trails

Bicyclists can cruise through a stretch of the metro area’s popular Oak Leaf Trail that winds through the park. But for something truly serene, meander along Grant Park’s Seven Bridges Trail.

No, its name is not an homage to the Steve Young song made famous by the Eagles, but Seven Bridges Trail has rightfully earned its own little slice of fame. Midwest Living magazine named the 2-mile loop one of Wisconsin’s best fall hikes, and countless selfies use the first of those (actually 10) bridges as a beckoning backdrop. The artistic blending of bridges, stairs and paver stones into the surrounding habitat might make you wonder if Mother Nature herself carved out your path.

Dine at Ferch’s Beachside Restaurant

”Top Chef” fans may remember Grant Park’s beach hosting the Wisconsin fish boil challenge, and while the “cheftestants” have left, Ferch’s Beachside Grill remains to whet your appetite. Generations of Milwaukeeans have shared smiles and laughs over Ferch’s burgers and hotdogs, frozen custards and shakes. Now, you can savor their treats along with a postcard panorama. And on summertime Friday nights, Ferch’s music series features live performers and bands, not to mention all of Grant Park beach as your dancefloor.

South Milwaukee Yacht Club

This boating community’s 90-plus dock slips are tucked into Grant Park’s southeast corner, and its roots date back 70-plus years. Modern amenities for boaters drifting by include a clubhouse and bar, an outdoor pavilion, bathroom and shower facilities, a fish cleaning station and a fuel dock. The club also hosts fishing contests and provides sailing lessons for the area’s youth.

Events & Activities

It’s only natural that a place as inviting as Grant Park would be a favorite gathering place for the community. Grant Park Beach hosts volleyball leagues on weeknights throughout the spring and summer. The park is home to several road races, including the Big Chill 5K & 10 K in January, the 5K SMArt Walk/Run to support performing arts, and the Starfish 5K Run/Walk to support Royal Family Kids.
