James Beard-Recognized Restaurants

Milwaukee’s James Beard-recognized restaurants and chefs showcase the creativity and culinary talent that have helped put the city on the national dining map.

Sanford is one of Milwaukee’s premier destinations for seasonal fine dining, offering a four-course prix fixe menu and a seven-course chef-selected tasting experience built around peak-season ingredients. Housed in a former family grocery store, the restaurant helped establish Milwaukee’s reputation as a culinary destination, earning chef Sandy D’Amato the city’s first James Beard Award for Best Chef: Midwest in 1996, followed by chef Justin Aprahamian in 2014.

Lupi & Iris pairs Mediterranean-inspired cuisine with an elegant dining room filled with indoor trees and wood-fired cooking. Signature dishes include octopus a la plancha, veal chops and Dover sole. Chef Adam Siegel, who previously won Best Chef: Midwest at Lake Park Bistro, earned a James Beard nod for Best New Restaurant with Lupi & Iris.

The Diplomat is a favorite for date nights on Brady Street, serving inventive takes on comfort food such as salt cod hashbrowns, blue cheese panna cotta and its signature peanut butter pie. The restaurant’s menu and hospitality earned chef and co-owner Dane Baldwin a nomination for Best Chef: Midwest in 2022.

Amilinda brings the flavors of Spain and Portugal to your plate through a seasonal menu that blends Iberian traditions with Wisconsin ingredients. You can expect dishes like grilled cabbage with Goan coconut curry and flank steak with cherry tomato jam. Chef Gregory León has received James Beard Award recognition for four consecutive years, earning nominations in 2022 and 2023, followed by semifinalist honors in 2024 and 2025.

Michelin Guide Recognition

Milwaukee’s growing reputation extends beyond the James Beard Awards. In 2026, the city was selected as one of six destinations included in the Michelin American Great Lakes Guide, set to launch in 2027.

Along with national recognition from the James Beard Foundation and a Wisconsin season of “Top Chef,” the Michelin Guide further highlights Milwaukee as a destination for exceptional dining.

Classic Milwaukee Food Experiences

Want to eat like a local? Milwaukee’s taverns, fish fry hot spots, supper clubs and frozen custard shops offer some of the city’s most iconic dining experiences.

Historic Saz’s State House has served fried white cheddar curds with white BBQ sauce since 1976 and Lakefront Brewery puts a creative twist on the classic with a new cheese curd flavor featured each month.

A Friday fish fry is a rite of passage found at local staples such as Swingin’ Door Exchange, a classic downtown saloon that uses cod, shrimp and perch for its Friday specials. St. Paul Fish Company offers hand-breaded fish, including walleye and lake perch. Sobelman’s Pub & Grill, a cozy tavern in Menomonee Valley, serves beer-battered cod baskets along with sausages and burger-topped Bloody Marys.

The Conroy reimagines the traditional supper club with caviar, roasted seafood towers and Japanese Wagyu steaks. Finish on a sweet note at Fred’s Frozen Custard & Grill, for frozen custard shakes blended with anything from banana sauce to root beer, and Kopp’s Frozen Custard, which has been serving custard malts, sodas and sundaes since 1950.
